Stores, especially the major retailers, offer deep discounts on Black Friday to entice holiday shoppers into plopping down a wad of cash on Christmas gifts. A lot of stores keep their Black Friday deals under top secret lock and key until the main event, which this year is Friday, November 27, 2009.

Dating back to the 1960s, the Black Friday holiday shopping weekend gets its name from the fact that retailers consider the day after Thanksgiving as a time to get “in the black” and make a profit, opposed to “in the red” and in debt. Even though more money is spent shopping for gifts the Saturday before Christmas and on Christmas Eve, Black Friday is the busiest retail shopping day of the year because shoppers get out and navigate the malls for that special gift at a low price that can’t be beat. One of the reasons the foot traffic is so heavy is because most shoppers have the day after Thanksgiving off.

A major benefit of Black Friday shopping is that shoppers can find major discounts and sales on their favorite items as well as gifts for loved ones and friends. The catch is that stores only offer Black Friday deals in limited quantities and at odd times like midnight or 5 a.m. in the morning.
